Phil teaches guitar lessons.

Multifaceted guitarist and educator Phil Ring has been teaching and performing extensively in St. Louis and across the United States since 2005. Phil received his BM and MM in Jazz Performance from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Described by a colleague as a “musical chameleon,” Phil is adept at a wide variety of styles. He has been featured in performances and recordings of jazz, r&b, funk, rock, metal, americana, and more. Notable performances include playing with Theo Peoples of The Temptations/4 Tops and Wayne Newton.

In addition to being an in-demand guitarist for hire, Phil is also a founding member of two prominent St. Louis original progressive metal and rock bands, The Gorge and Thor Axe. The Gorge’s 2016 release “Thousand Year Fire” received local, national, and international media acclaim. Thor Axe released its first full length album “Solar Rips” in 2022. Phil has been lucky to tour the United States with The Gorge and Thor Axe, and has shared the stage with notable national and international bands including The Dillinger Escape Plan, The Sword, Periphery, Intronaut, Between The Buried and Me, The Ocean, Trans Am, and many more.

Phil has taught hundreds of guitar, bass, and general music students since beginning teaching at age 19 in 2005. In developing his teaching style, Phil has sought to instill a solid base of fundamentals while fostering the student’s individual creative voice. Forever a student himself, Phil has continued his own guitar education after graduate school by studying with world renowned jazz guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg.
