Miguel Valerio's research and teaching focus on the African diaspora in the literature and culture of the Iberian world from the late medieval period to the present.

His essay, “The Queen of Sheba’s Manifold Body: Creole Afro-Mexican Women Performing Sexuality, Cultural Identity, and Power in Seventeenth-Century Mexico City,” appeared in Afro-Hispanic Review 35.2 (2016): 79-98. His work has also appeared in Confraternitas. He is currently working on his first book, The Black Kings and Queens of Colonial Mexico City: Identity, Performance, and Power, 1539-1640.
