Jiyoon Lee is a passionate Korean instructor keen on making her mother tongue accessible for all learners. Before coming to Washington University in St. Louis, Jiyoon specialized in teaching Korean heritage learners at the University of California, Berkeley, and has also taught Korean at the University of Oregon. She graduated with her B.A. in Korean Language and Literature in South Korea and continued her studies in the United States by earning an M.A. in Applied Linguistics with a Language Teaching Specialization where she focused her coursework on computer-assisted language learning (CALL) and course design. Before coming to the States, she worked in language program coordination for Korea University and the Itaewon Global Village Center in Seoul, South Korea. She is a member of the American Association of Teachers of Korean (AATK), and her research interests include heritage language learning, bilingualism, and Korean honorifics and speech styles.

Her publication Honorifics in the Marketplace: A Multimodal Indexical Analysis in Korean Linguistics (Lee, J., & Brown, L., John Benjamins Publishing) explores the shifting speech styles Koreans use in conventional and corporate marketplaces.

She enjoys spending her free time traveling with her husband and son.
