Richard Rudner

Professor Rudner received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1948 with a dissertation titled Four Studies of the Aesthetic Object, directed by Nelson Goodman.  He taught at Washington University 1949-1952, then was in the Office of Naval Research 1952-1954, at Swarthmore College 1954-1956, and at Michigan State University 1956-1962.  He returned permanently to Washington University with an initial sabbatical year 1962-1963.  Rudner brought with him the journal Philosophy of Science, which he continued to edit until 1976.

Professor Rudner is author of Philosophy of Social Science and co-author (with Robert B. Barrett and Robert J. Wolfson) of Organizational Decision Theory:  A Constructional Approach.  He is co-editor (with Israel Scheffler) of Logic and Art:  Essays in Honor of Nelson Goodman.  Professor Rudner died of cancer in 1979 at the age of fifty-six.  In his honor, the Richard Rudner Memorial Lounge was dedicated.
