SCHEDULE
Each year the MCAA (Midwest Conference on Asian Affairs) hosts a one-day
workshop for K-12 teachers in conjunction with its annual meeting.
This year we will host a daylong workshop for teachers
to help learn strategies for using contemporary
films and popular graphic and video media on Asia in the classroom. The
first half will focus on films and the ways contemporary commercial films
such as “The Painted Veil” can be used in the classroom. The second half
will consider the importance of graphic novels (comics) and animation in
Korea and Japan.
There will be a
guided tour through the exhibit “Korean Comics: A Society Through Small
Frames,” which will be on display in the Teaching Gallery of the Mildred
Lane Kemper Art Museum of Washington University in St. Louis. This
exhibit examines the changing social realities of Korean society from the
1950s to the 1990s through comic books.
Friday, October 19 8:00pm
