​Professor Smith's research is focused upon development and application of remote and in situ sensors in diverse problems of environment and planetary science.

His primary area of research is directed toward the development of a novel method for accurate, precise, and long-term atmospheric CO2 measurements as ground truth for the global carbon dioxide sink and source determination that is a key element in the verification of global climate change issues.
