The Graduate School Office in Umrath 314-935-4843 rjsmith@wustl.edu Dean Richard J. Smith is a paleoanthropologist, interested in the
application of statistical models to the interpretation of the human
fossil record. Before becoming Dean of the Graduate School in
July, 2008, he served as Chair of the Department of Anthropology for 15
years. As Dean, Professor Smith works with the student
organizations, faculty, graduate program directors, department chairs,
and the Deans of other schools to ensure the continued growth and
excellence of the programs leading to all Ph.D's awarded by Washington
University, as well as all non-professional Master's degrees. He
serves as Chair of the governing bodies of the Graduate School,
including the Graduate Council and the Graduate & Professional
Student Coordinating Committee.

Dean Elaine Berland works with the Graduate Council, the Professional
and Graduate Student Coordinating Committee (ProGradS), and the Trustee
Research-Graduate Affairs Committee on new policies and initiatives
related to graduate academic and student affairs. As Director of
the Graduate Center and advisor to the GSS, GPC and university-wide
graduate student groups, she works to promote graduate student
leadership, shared governance and interdisciplinary opportunities.
Dean Berland serves as the Academic Integrity Officer for the
Graduate School and liaison to the Career Center and the Teaching
Center. She administers the Dean's Award for Teaching Excellence
(TA's); the Presidential Management Fellowship program; New Graduate
Student Orientation programs, and the Graduate Student Handbook. She
is the founding director of the National Conference on Graduate Student
Leadership.
- Nancy P. Pope

Associate
Dean Pope is a medievalist whose specialty is fifteenth-century
manuscripts. As Associate Dean, she directs the Mr. & Mrs. Spencer
T. Olin Fellowship Program for Women, which supports dozens of graduate
and professional students across all Schools of the University. She
also administers other
externally funded fellowships won by students, advises
department-specific peer-mentoring programs for doctoral students in
Arts & Sciences, and serves as the Graduate School's Office Manager
and its liaison to the Community Service Office. Dean Pope
oversees various completion issues, such as defense committee
membership, electronic submission of dissertations and theses, and the
Hooding and Recognition Ceremony. She is the editor of the
Graduate School Bulletin.

Notaro is the Director of the Chancellor's Graduate Fellowship program.
In this role she administers payroll, plans activities, conferences,
and other events, and monitors the academic progress of the Fellows.
Dean Notaro helps to recruit talented and diverse students to the
graduate school by hosting prospective students on our campus, inviting
professors to speak with students, and attending recruitment events
throughout the country. Dean Notaro administers the Stafford Student
Loan program, the Federal Work Study program, the Child Day Care
Subsidy for Ph.D. students, as well as several grants and fellowships. She serves as the liaison with Student Health Services.

registrar for the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Ann monitors
all aspects of records and registration and advises students on
policies and procedures of the Graduate School. She is responsible for
administration of the Graduate School’s student health fee subsidy,
handles proposals and approvals for new graduate courses, processes
admissions files and serves as liaison for University College graduate
programs, and handles registration of unclassified students. She
also produces data reports for the use of the graduate school dean and
the graduate departments and programs.

Sciences, Angie keeps all current student files and updates the Student
Information System. She assists in the registration of students and
works closely with the departments within Arts and Sciences to perform
degree audits prior to students' commencement dates. Angie posts
remission and approves registration for summer school courses. She
oversees the application and completion of the Certificate Programs
which are handled within the Graduate School. She is responsible for
collecting and processing the A.B./A.M. applications.

assistant to the Dean of the Graduate School, Ms. Lowry works with
faculty, departmental staff, and graduate students. She is responsible
for explaining Graduate School guidelines to students, faculty and
staff. She provides administrative support to the Dean by
managing his correspondence and calendar, facilitating his interactions
with department chairs and graduate studies advisors, and assisting
with annual competitions for the Faculty Research Grant and other
grants and scholarships. She works with faculty and staff to
process admissions, to make financial awards to new and continuing
students, and to allocate assistantship and Federal Wrok Study budgets.

manages regular and deferred admissions. Managing admissions
includes mailing the admissions and award letters to admitted students
and tracking the applicants’ responses. She also manages the
on-line application system, including training departmental staff who
work with graduate admissions. In addition to admissions work, Bridget
coordinates the International Graduate Scholarship Conference and
oversees updates to the on-line funding recommendation system.

Berland. In this capacity, she provides logistical support for graduate
student groups in Arts and Sciences and University-wide, and for
meetings of the Graduate Council, the Board of Trustees
Research-Graduate Affairs Committee, and ProGradS. She is responsible
for the logistics for the annual New Student Orientation program, the
Dean’s Reception, and new Teaching Assistant Orientation. Rachel
maintains email lists for graduate
students, and the Ph.D. job placement files. She provides support for Graduate School publications and processes
graduate student registration for access to the GradLab.

Accounting Coordinator

supervises and approves the accounting for the Graduate School
of Arts and Sciences. Departments rely on her to transfer Federal Work
Study cost sharing funds, travel support and travel subsidy into their
accounts and to process student account adjustments for tuition
remission from departmental or external sources. Graduate student
groups in arts & Sciences and University-wide graduate student
groups come to her as she budgets their funds, processes their
reimbrusements and provides them with a detailed accounting of their
balances. She also processes all of the Peer Mentoring
reimbursements. Louise supervises the payroll approval process for all
graduate students in Arts & Sciences and for programs and grants
held in the Graduate School for fellowships in other Schools. She
is particularly responsible for the payroll of students supported by
fellowships administered by the Graduate School.

Nancy
provides support to Associate Dean Nancy Pope by assisting with every
aspect of the work for the Olin Fellowship Program and for the
administration of external funding won by students. She also
assists her by working with Aramark and Facilities and by ordering all
office supplies. Nancy processes paper copies of dissertations
and theses for binding and helps plan and manage the annual Hooding and
Recognition Ceremony. Working with other members of the office,
she posts academic-year tuition remission for all graduate students in
Arts & Sciences who have been awarded it.

Engineering Student Coordinator

Mary serves as the primary liaison between the Graduate Arts and
Sciences and the Ph.D. students in the School of Engineering &
Applied Science.
She handles the Graduate School's portion of their admissions process,
helps with their orientation, updates their student data and academic
milestones in SIS Admin, and provides them with dissertation intake and
degree certifications. Any Ph.D. student in Engineering who has a
question for the Graduate School should consult Mary. She also serves
as the Graduate School's Web Manager and as the Associate Editor of its
Bulletin and Handbook.

Amy provides Assistant Dean Sheri Notaro with assistance in the administration
of the following areas: loans and other federal programs, applications,
award letters, record keeping, fellowships, recruitment, and
conferences. Amy helps coordinate and plan all aspects of the
Chancellor's Fellowship and processes payments from various budgets.
She prepares check requests, purchase orders, and ensures the efficient
processing of all accounts payable.

Nancy provides administrative, multimedia and operations support for the Liberman Graduate Center, the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences Office staff, and graduate student groups housed in the Center. She is the first point of contact for graduate
students, faculty, staff, and visitors
to the Center. Nancy is responsible for scheduling events in the Center, updating electronic and print communications regarding events of interest to graduate students in the Center, and processing reimbursement forms.
