MUSIC AS MEDIUM TO THE BLACK SPIRIT

Damon Davis is a multi-media American artist, musician, and filmmaker based in St. Louis, Missouri. His 2014 public art installation "All Hands on Deck" has been collected in the National Museum of African American History and Culture. For Spring 2020, Mr. Davis is serving as Artist-in-Residence for the Department of African & African American Studies.

Damon Davis, current Artist in Residence it the Department of African and African-American Studies, will discuss connections within different Black American musical genres over the last century. The talk, structured as part lecture, part discussion, will explore specifically how the spirit identity and the genetic memory of a people are passed down through music and its messaging.
