Some baseball history: Charles Louis "Deacon" Phillipe (Phillipi) was born
5/23/1872 in Rural Retreat. He pitched and won the first World Series game ever,
in 1903, beating Cy Young. (Also in that game was Louis Criger, born in Elkhart
Ind but probably a cousin of the Va. Cregers). Bernard Creger -- born in
Wytheville in 1927 -- also played in the majors. Other local boys include Norman
Cullop (1887, Chilhowie), James Goodson (1948, Pulaski), and John Watson (1908,
Tazewell).
