THE CHINESE THEATER

Survey of the performance and literary traditions of the Chinese theater from their pre-Tang origins to the present day.  The course focuses on three forms:  14th century zaju plays, 16th- and 17th century chuanqi plays, and recent films from China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.

 
PREREQUISITE:  a background in studies of either China or theatre in other cultures.

CREDITS:  3 units.
