Managing the ADHD or Defiant Child: A Parent Training Program

This 10 session program provides an opportunity for parents of children with ADHD or defiant behaviors to increase the effectiveness of their child management skills and enhance the quality of parent-child interactions. The foundation of the program is a set of behavior management procedures described by Dr. Russell A. Barkley, a leading expert on ADHD.

The focus of the program is on providing parents with skills to increase child compliance with parental commands and minimize problem behaviors. Each session is designed to provide instruction on a specific strategy and support the implementation of the strategies at home. The program is designed for parents with children 6-12 years old. The group will meet for 2 hours weekly.

Participants expecting to miss more than 2 sessions are discouraged from attending. All interested individuals will first be screened to determine the appropriateness of the group for their needs. The fee for the group will be $150 and includes the cost for materials such as handouts on strategies and homework assignments. The group will be led by a graduate student in the clinical psychology program at Washington University and supervised by Dr. Denise Head, a licensed clinical psychologist.
