Funding Your Experience

For many students, the availability of scholarships, financial assistance, and loans are a deciding factor for studying abroad. Being able to afford to study abroad may seem difficult, but with some research, planning and financial advising, you will be able to identify those funding opportunities that apply to your situation.

It is important to note that most Washington University Arts & Sciences students who study abroad on WU approved programs are able to utilize their existing WU scholarships as well as federal and state financial aid. WU students participating in either the TuitionPay Program (TPP) or Partners in Education with Parents (PEP) may use these funds to study abroad. Some students, however, may need additional funding sources. Students must be diligent in researching and identifying these sources and in complying with each organization's application requirements and deadlines.

Tips for identifying and receiving study abroad funding

  • Start early! Most scholarship/grant programs expect that you will apply a semester or year in advance of studying abroad.
  • Think about yourself as a member of various groups. You may qualify for funding specific to an academic major, language study, or for study in less traveled parts of the world.
  • Research. Research. Research. You may need to look at many resources before you find the one that is right for you.
  • Target your application. Know the goals and interest of the funding agency when you apply so that you can target your application to their priorities.
  • Carefully choose those who will recommend you. A recommendation should come from someone who knows you well. If academic recommendations are required, use a professor, academic advisor, department chair, or dean.
