What kinds of performance ensembles does the Department of Music offer?
When and where do the performance ensembles rehearse?
Most of our ensembles rehearse about one or two evenings per week, with occasional rehearsals and/or sectionals prior to concerts. Can I participate in private lessons or performing groups even if I don't major in music?
Yes. Our performing ensembles are open to all University students. Ensemble auditions are held during the first two weeks of school. Sign up in the Music Building for an audition time. Click here to view audition times and requirements. A large percentage of the membership in our ensembles do not major in music. Private lessons are available in all instruments either for academic credit or for non-matriculated students.

Will I be able to earn academic credit for performing in one of the Department of Music ensembles?
Yes. All of our ensembles can be worth academic credit, but the number of units varies.

If I am a transfer student or returning student, do I need to audition?
Yes. All students are required to audition or re-audition for placement in an ensemble or program.

What do I have to do for the audition?
Auditions vary according to the particular ensemble or program, but all are designed to measure the experience of the musician. Detailed information about vocal, instrumental, about audition requirements is provided on the Audition Information page.

Will I be able to join an ensemble mid-year?
You should audition at the beginning of the fall semester. Occasional openings may occur during the season, which are filled by special auditions with the director.
