Flute Choir

Flute Choir is a group of competent flutists from the University and the community who gather together once a week to blend the whole family of flutes into varied styles of musical arrangements. Enrollment varies from 6 to 16 and a concert is performed once a semester. Janice Smith conducts the Flute Choir.

Piccolos, C flutes, alto and bass flutes are used to fill out the sound of a choir. Members take turns on the various instruments to gain experience in handling and tuning each one. It also gives students an opportunity to maintain their musical skills amid their many academic pressures.

Music includes original music written specifically for flute choir, some slightly more popular tunes, and many fine arrangements of classical music such as Bach, Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, Debussy, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Dvorak.

Membership is by audition with expectations of 4 sharps, 4 flats, a good tone, knowledge of intonation, and a strong emphasis on rhythmic integrity. Knowledge of 2/4, ¾, 6/8 and cut time is essential. Most of the sessions are sight-reading only. Music seldom is assigned to be taken out for practice, unless necessary close to the final performance. This has been a successful ongoing organization for 20 years.
