Chamber Ensembles

The Chamber Ensembles at Washington University, trios, quartets, and quintets play a concert at the end of each semester. The groups are assembled and coached by Elizabeth Macdonald. The primary focus of the course is to study and play works from the heart of the string quartet repertoire, works of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms. Though the groups are mainly string quartets, there is also the option of string quintets, sextets, piano trios, and wind quartets and quintets. Any student who is interested in learning the viola da gamba could take part in the Washington University Viol Consort.

The students in a chamber ensemble receive one hour coaching per week (there is an applied music fee assessed by the Department of Music) and are encouraged to schedule their own additional rehearsals. The student groups also have a high profile on campus and play at many events, both on and off campus.

Students interested in playing in a chamber ensemble, or any group of strings, should sign up for an audition through the Department of Music at the beginning of the school year.
