course description
Composition II is the continuation of Composition I.  It is ideal for the student who wishes to further develop their skills as a choreographer and performer.  This course will be a continuation and practicum of methods covered in the first semester. This course is also a requirement for the dance minor and major.

I believe the primary function of this class to be a workshop in which to explore, define, and craft space and time and energy. Through problem solving and design exercises, we will Continue to develop a "vocabulary" for more articulate physical expression, and the skills to organize and give structure to your work.  Building on previous experience and study, skills will be applied in a more "product oriented" application towards finished  solos, duets, and group work.

philosophy
There are as many ways to teach a composition class as there are ways to make a dance. I do not propose that my way is the "right way"-- there is no such thing. But with an open mind, you should find this class challenging, frustrating, exhilarating and a place to take risks, fall down, get up and try again. All you really need do is check your egos at the door and enjoy the chance to look at yourself, since that is the stuff of which your choreography is made. The more honestly you can approach yourself and your environment, the more rich will be your work.

attendance
is crucial to this class for proper development and participation in the group and individual process. Missing class would be analogous to dancers skipping your rehearsals when you are creating a new work. Only 2 unexcused absences are permitted, after which your grade may suffer sharply.
 
 

grading
will be based on class participation, self motivation, evidence of outside work and completion of assignments.  As this is a 300 level course, grading standards for work are higher than for that of Composition I.  If at anytime you have a question regarding your grade, please feel free to see me.
 
 


Why would I take 309 instead of 303?

309 is a special course number which includes two credits of the appropriate dance technique level for a total of 4 units. therefore the student enrolled in 309 will also be required to attend two classes per week of their appropriate dance technique level.

why is this important?
since a dance technique class concurrent with composition is a requirement, 209 offers the student the opportunity to package both technique and composition together under one course number.

This is often confusing because people typically think that 309 is a separate class from 303.  But understand that the composition component of 309 takes place at the same time and location as 303, the 2 unit comp course--it is literally the same class, comprised of both 303 and 309 students.

special note: if you are considering a minor or major in dance and may need certain technique level requirements, this course will not reflect credit for the technique class on your transcript.
