David Marchant is Professor of the Practice, on the faculty of Washington University in St. Louis since 1994, specializing in aesthetic theory, technique, composition and improvisation in the concert art of contemporary dance. He is the coordinator of the University College Somatic Studies Certificate Program at Washington University, offering students a curriculum in integrative movement practices, complimented by theoretical knowledge from a wide variety of fields investigating the art, spirit, and science of human movement. Mr. Marchant is a certified teacher of the Alexander Technique and a member of theAmerican Society of Alexander Teachers ( AmSAT). He maintains a professional private teaching practice, instructing individuals in the methods of F.M. Alexander for re-pattering of fundamental movement coordination. David was a company member with the Utah Repertory Dance Theatre from 1989 to 1991. David was a recipient of the Iowa Arts Fellowship for excellence in choreography from 1991 to 1993, while earning a Master of Fine Arts degree from University of Iowa. He is Co-Artistic Director of ZoMotion Arts with his wife, Holly Seitz Marchant, performing site-specific installations in natural environments, including tree-climbing as dance art form. In addition to his work as a choreographic artist, David is a recognized professional improvisational composer and performer, including contact improvisation, and has performed with notable artists such as Andrew Harwood and Chris Aiken. Research David is developing a dance/movement coordination training method called “Quadruped,” which applies principles of the Alexander Technique and Dart Procedures to refine coordination, strength, flexibility, and balance. This approach is also being explored as a somatic practice, suitable for all people, for a variety of contructive, educational or therapeutic applications. Additionally, Mr.
Marchant investigates the application of Contact
Improvisation as a therapeutic intervention for persons with
Parkinson's
Disease (see more below). David also studies the relationship of visual and kinesthetic perception to the aesthetics of human motion, and performance skill of dancing. And, for the past 5 years, David, along with collaborataors John Toenjes and Ben Smith at the University of Illinois, is presently investigating computer mediated dance/music composition. We are not only interested in the ways in which computers offer new tools to make art work, but also as potential physical educational and therapeutic tools that develop movement skill and kinesthetic awareness through dynamic audio feedback.Teaching & Choreography David is an active professional artist and teacher, performing and conducting master classes and residencies at universities throughout the United States and abroad. He has been a guest at Movement Arts and Design in Europe (MADE) in France, Tsinghua University in Beijing China, Beijing Modern Dance Company, American Dance Festival, University of Iowa, University of Illinois, Chicago Academy of the Arts, Stephens College Winona State University, Purdue, University of Northern Colorado, Scripps and Pomona College. For a list of David's offerings for master classes and guest residency activities click here. David’s dances have been re-staged for Dance Repertory San Francisco, Suzanne Grace & Dancers, Chicago Academy of the Arts, University of Northern Colorado, and University of Iowa's touring company. He has been commissioned to create new work for Missouri Contemporary Ballet, Atrek Dance Collective and Winona State University. His choreography has been selected six times by a jury of professional peers for encore performances at the American College Dance Festival Regional Conferences, and the National Conference in 1996. David is also an avid photographer, scuba diver, glider pilot, and rock climber. press/reviews click here to for press excerpts of David's choreography This fall I will be creating a brand new work for my students at Washington University that will premiere in December in Edison Theatre.
In February I traveled to Purdue University to give a week of master classes, and restaged my choreography, 9.8m/sec2 on the student performing company. Parkionson's/Contact Improvisation Study Paper Published October 2010 In spring of 2009 I collaborated with Washington University Physical Therapy Professor Gammon Earhart and Graduate Student Jennifer Sylvester to do a two-week uncontrolled study to assess the effectiveness of Contact Improvisation as an intevention for Parkinson's Disease. I took along student dancers as partners for the study paricipants and taught classes in contact for and hour and a half a day, for ten consecutive days. We pre and post-tested 13 individuals with Parkinson's. Our paper has just appeared in the October issue of Complementary Therapies in Medicine. It reports that participants demonstrated significant improvements in balance and functional mobility. We hope to do more follow up studies to learn more. Abstract MADE in France 2010 In June 2010, I was on the faculty of the Wash U study abroad program, MADE in France, in Paris and Burgundy. Holly came along with me as well as our new son, Elliot. This year's theme investigated the intersection of movement and sound. I gave master classes in technique and on Leonardo's Chimes, v3.1, now working on a single laptop computer with a Nintendo Wii remote control. I also gave a performance with this system and Holly and I danced an improvisational duet. TEDx talk at University of Illinois In April, John Toenjes and I gave a TED talk at the TEDx event in Urbana, Illinois. We demonstrated the prototype of a computer dance/music system. It is a musical instrument you play by dancing. Here is the link to a video of our Talk Washington University Dance Theatre/ American College Dance Conference Honors Holly and I collaborated a new work, "It Sang A Long Time Ago," a duet for two student dancers. The work was subsequently selected by the faculty to represent Wash U at the American College Dance Conference at University of Illinois. At the festival the work was honored with "Best of Festival" encore performance, and was selected 2nd alternate for the National Festival. Somatics Workshop for Social Workers In the fall I led a one-day workshop for a group of social workers at Synergy Services in Kansas City on "resiliency" and somatic practice. We were exploring the idea that mental, social, and personal well being can be approached through movement practices that encourage self-awareness, and study of one's movement habits. HASTAC Conference III, 2009 In April, John Teonjes, Ben Smith and I set up the Leonardo's Chimes interactive dance/music environment at the HASTAC Conference 2009, at University of Illinois. We introduced the instrument as a movement/music educational game system. Scripps College Residency January 2009 I was asked to go back to Scripps and Pomona Colleges in California again this year. I was there in February for 4 days working with their very interesting, bright students on Quadruped, and other philosophies in action. Washington University Dance Theatre This year for WUDT, instead of choreographing a traditional stage work, I organzied an end-of-show, fulll house dance--a rave. We organized an easy-to-follow core dance with the whole cast of the show, and invited audience to join, in the seats, on-stage. It was a blast; all three shows, the stage completely filled with people dancing together, including our 86 year old, Katie, from the Liz Lerman dance. Liz Lerman Residency Also in the fall 2008 I was project manager for the Liz Lerman residency, focussing efforts to use dance as a means to engage community on the subject of the immigrant experience, culminating in a performance opportunity, open to all people in st. louis, in Washington University Dance Theatre, December 5-7. This was such an incredible experience for everyone involved, community members, students, working together to make this beautiful work of art. And it was a career altering experience for me, broadening my vision about what dance is, who dances, and the value of art. Witnessing the way that Liz and company member Cassie Meador worked with people opened many new ideas beginning to percolate that we can continue here in our community....more to come! Somatic Studies Cerfiticate Progam at Wash U In the fall of 2007 I became coordinator of the new Somatic Studies Certificate Program in University College, Washington University's continuing education school. It comprises coursework that is primarily experiential, movement oriented in nature. The program launches with a new course I facilitated called Introduction to Somatic with 15 guest lecturers and teachers, covering topics related to the body, from Yoga and the Alexander technique, to evolution, anthropology, religious studies, and education. It was a fantastic course for all of us, me included, getting such a broad spectrum of ideas and experiences about human movement and being. In October 2008, Holly and I did a ZoMotion event on Washington University campus as part of the Freshmen Reading program of events surrounding the book, "Field Notes from a Catastrophe." It is an evironmental message, and our work provides an opportunity to encourage people to look at our relationship to trees and the natural world with a tangible sense of interdependence. In July 2008, John Toenjes and I presented an evening length interactive music/dance performance at the Ingenuity Festival in Cleveland, Ohio, including Leonardo's Chimes and 2 new interactive works, "Songs of the Elastic Halloon," and "Soundwave Surfing." All of these works use computers to turn space into an interactive sonic and visual landscape. Put simply, we make music and visual art through danced movement. It is an exciting frontier for us, seemlessly integrating movement, visual art and music. In May and June 2008, I was on the faculty of the new Wash U study abroad program, MADE in France, in Paris and Burgundy. Holly came along with me, and it was an invigorating time for us, learning and deepening our processes of interacting with objects and environments in movement. April 19th, Holly and I as ZO /\/\otion /\rts gave a premier performance called Moving Landscapes at our home in Innsbrook Missouri. The event was comprised of a series of site specific installations of movement artwork sitated in natural landscapes. The work included several dances in which we climb a tree, tracing the pathway of its growth. March 29 was invited by Edison Theatre to give a pre-show talk for the Susan Marshall performance of "Cloudless," Susan's most recent collaborative-process art work. Keith Sawyer, Author of "Group Genius", Jerry McAdam and I had a conversation about improvisation, and collaborative processes as an ideal means to creativity and problem solving, whether in art work, or business. March 19th I gave a Lecture to the Washigton University community called "Mind in the Matter: Movement as a Mode of Intelligent Thought." In this presentation I spoke of movement as a way of thinking, researching, learning and understanding. In particular, I presented movement material from my research on Quadrupedal movement as a feedback for neuromuscular coordination. March 2008, I was at American College Dance Conference in Kansas, where I led a discussion called "Speaking of Dance: the Language we Teach With" and also a Master Class of "Quadruped." February 2008, John Toenjes
and I performed Leonardo's
Chimes at the In November I was invited to
London
for
for the London
Consortium conference, "Take a Deep Breath" at
the Tate Modern where I performed the solo "December" and gave a
talk titled: In December I premiered Acid Jazz, a
new dance for students of Washington
University for our annual concert in edison
theatre. It is an
experiement I call "jazz minimalism" exploring the jazz dance
vocabulary in a minimalist compositional form. In October 2007, I was at the University of Northern Colorado, restaging "Nos In Unum" and teaching master classes in Quadruped. The students were very open and eager and I had a great time working with my cast and teaching. In July, 2007, I was in
Beijing,
China working at Tsinghua University English Immersion Summer
Camp. Though this was not a specifically dance teaching
opportunity, I was lecturing on dance as art and entertainment in
American Culture to Chinese college students. Also in April 2007, my wife Holly and I collaborated a new commission for the Missouri Contemporary Ballet Company in Columbia, Missouri. This was an invigorating project for me as it was the first pointe piece I have ever made. The result was a contemporary pas de deux. <> In January of 2007, I taught a series of masterclasses at Purdue University, in Quadruped, composition and improvisation. It was brief, but intense and the students and faculty were great to spend time with and share ideas. In the fall of 2006, John Toenjes and I premiered our interactive music/dance work, Leonardos Chimes, first at Washington Unversity in September, and then at University of Illinois in November. This work is exciting because it utilizes computers and motion tracking to enable the dancer to spontaneously compose the music by dancing. In April 2007, John and I also traveled to Duke University for the first conference of HASTAC,Humanities, Arts, Science, Technology, Advanced Collaboratory. At the conference we presented a paper about the work and its implications as a unique kind of computer interface; one that requires the user to move with full-body range and dynamics.
