for students who have little or no Chinese. We will emphasize functional everyday
spoken Chinese in an American college setting. Both the simplified forms and the
full forms of the Chinese characters will be taught; students are required to write
ONE of the two forms but to be able to recognize both. By the end of the year (two
semesters), students will have been introduced to most of the important grammatical
structures of spoken Chinese and a vocabulary of about 700 lexical items. With the
language skills acquired during the first year, students should be able to survive
most of the simple daily conversational situations.PREREQUISITE: students with some Chinese background must take Chinese Placement Test in order to be
placed into a proper level. We reserve the rights to replace, at any time in the duration of the
course, those who prove to be in a class unsuitable to his/her proficiency.TEXTBOOK: Yue-hua Liu and Ted Yao, Integrated Chinese, Volume One-Two,

HOMEWORK: The regular homework includes
-- Copying the new characters in the character book
-- Memorizing the new vocabulary for each lesson
-- Listening to the dialogue(s)(available at lab)
-- Written exercises based on the designated lessonSUB SESSIONS: Attending Tuesday sub sessions is mandatory. These sessions are for practice
and enforcement of grammar and vocabulary.ONE-ON-ONE: Each student meets for 15 minutes weekly with a TA to work individually on pronunciation
and grammar.
GRADING: The semester letter grade will be based on:
10% -- Class attendance & performance (attendance at the sub session and one-on-one included)
10% -- Vocabulary quizzes
No vocabulary quiz make-up will be given under any circumstances. Three lowest scores
will be dropped at the end of the semester.
10 -- Character writing and Grammar exercises
30% -- Weekly tests
Make-up quizzes will be allowed only when the absence is beyond the student's control.
At the end of the semester, the lowest test score will be dropped.
5% -- Individual sessions
15% -- Oral examinations
10% -- Mid-term written examination
10% -- Final written examination
The final letter grade is given according to the following conversion:
A+ = 99-100 A = 94-98 A- = 90-93
B+ = 87-89 B = 84-86 B- = 80-83
C+ = 77-79 C = 74-76 C- = 70-73
D = 60-69 F = Below 59
IMPORTANT:
1. Drops are allowed only upon full attendance.
2. The minimum grade is B- for students to continue to Chinese 102.
