Admissions
All applicants enter the program as PhD students. We do not award a terminal M.A. All incoming graduate students are fully funded through a tuition waiver and a fellowship. There is no specific grade point or GRE score required for admission to the PhD program, but we look for high achievement in a range of undergraduate English courses and in at least one paper submitted to us as a writing sample.
The department’s internal deadline for admission is January 4th, 2008. The application and all supporting materials must be received by then. Your application must include:
- application which includes the scan sheet
- $35 application fee
- GRE scores (both the General Test and Subject Test)

In addition, please send directly to the English Department:
- a statement of purpose describing your motivations and goals
- transcript(s) of previous work
- 3 letters of recommendation, preferably on or attached to Washington University forms, but we will accept dossiers from college placement services or through the on-line system
- a recent paper on a literary subject which MUST be sent via postal mail NOT included with the on-line application
