DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY

Degree Requirements and Grades

The rules of the Graduate School state that doctoral students are allowed a total of seven years to complete their entire program.  At the end of this period, the student will be considered inactive in conformity with the rules and regulations of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.  If this time is expired the student may petition the Doctoral Studies Committee of the Education Department, which will then consider whether to request an extension for the student to complete and defend the dissertation.

Assessments of student progress consist of course work grades and the regular yearly evaluations made by the Doctoral Studies Committee and department faculty.  The performance of students in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences is marked by the grades A, B, C, S (satisfactory), and F.  The grade of C indicates unsatisfactory work.  Plus or minus grades may be given, except for grades of B- and C+.  Much more important are the detailed evaluations of course or seminar work by instructors, of which the student is regularly informed by the Doctoral Studies Committee.  These evaluations are used in consultation with the Dean of the Graduate School regarding the distribution of fellowships, teaching assistantships, and research assistantships.
