“The Instability of Art: Architecture, Ornament, and an Island in Momoyama Japan”

On the island of Chikubushima stands a small jewel-like building commissioned by a ruling warrior family during the Momoyama period. Originally constructed in Kyoto, where it stood for a decade, the building was relocated to the island, transforming its function and meaning. Richly ornamented with polychrome paintings, black-and-gold lacquer, relief wood carvings, and metalwork, the building comprises the most fully realized ensemble of decoration surviving from the period.
