Tokugawa Period (1600-1868)

Genroku era (1688-1703)
Considered the culture high point of the Tokugawa Era
During this era we see the development of kabuki and bunraku (puppet theater), woodblock prints (ukiyo-e), haiku poetry, storybooks and professional storytellers, etc. Under the rule of Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, the Fifth Shogun, also known as the “Dog Shogun!”

 By 1679 there were over 100 licensed quarters
