JAPANESE THEATER
 
 


     In this course we will consider the historical development of Japanese dramatical literature, focusing on Noh and Bunraku.  Kabuki will be introduced through videos.  Of primary interest will be adaptations and transformations between time periods and cultures and between genres of literature, stagecraft, and film.  Additionally we will explore theories of gender performance as well as dramatical and narrative representation.  All readings will be in English.  Some videos will be in Japanese. Knowledge of Japanese is not required but familiarity with the Japanese literary tradition is strongly recommended.
