Readings in Latin Prose:  the Roman "Her"storians
L10  493  Latin
This course will examine the portrayals of the legendary women of early Rome and the women of the early Empire in the writings of Roman historians. Readings in Latin will include selections from Livy (the Sabine women, Lucretia, Tanaquil, Tullia) and Tacitus (Livia, Agrippina the Elder, Messalina, Agrippina the Younger). We will consider how the genre of history, the individual author, and the time period of the work affect these representations, what these women may have symbolized, and how the men associated with them may have influenced these depictions. There will also be supplementary readings from other Roman historians and biographers (in translation) and recent scholarship, as well as an examination of these women in non-literary sources.  Prereq: Latin 318C or permission of the instructor and sophomore standing or above. (INTERESTED FRESHMEN SHOULD CONSULT THE INSTRUCTOR AND CANNOT REGISTER WITHOUT PERMISSION.) 3 units.
