Survey of Latin Literature:  The Empire

A broad overview of the major literary achievements of the first century of the Roman empire with emphasis on Vergil and Livy.  Prereq: Latin 317C, placement by examination, or permission of the instructor.  3 units.

Being a Roman Governor: Tacitus and Pliny
L10  4961  Latin
Close reading of Tacitus' Agricola and Book Ten of Pliny's letters (his correspondence with Trajan).  Though Tacitus and Pliny are writing in completely different genres and styles, these works share a common thread:  the achievements and pitfalls of governing a distant Roman province in the late 1st – early 2nd centuries.  In addition to translating the texts, students will write a short research paper relevant to Tacitus, Pliny, and/or Roman government in the time of Domitian and Trajan.  There will be midterm and a final.  Prereq: Latin 318C or permission of instructor and sophomore standing or above.  (INTERESTED FRESHMEN SHOULD CONSULT THE INSTRUCTOR AND CANNOT REGISTER WITHOUT PERMISSION.)
