Beginning Latin I

Intro to forms and syntax of Classical Latin aimed at rapid acquisition of reading ability.  Attention also paid to aspects of Roman literary and political history.  Students who have already had Latin should consult the Chair of the Department.  4 units.

A survey of the major literary achievements of the Roman Republic, with an  emphasis on Cicero, Caesar, and Catullus.   Prereq: Latin 316C, placement by examination, or permission of the instructor.  3 units.

Plautus

Readings from the comedies of Plautus.  Discussion of play production in Republican Rome, reception, and interpretation.  An advanced level Latin reading load will be combined with secondary readings and reports.  Research project for graduate members.  Prereq: Latin 318C or permission of the instructor; sophomore standing or above.  (INTERESTED FRESHMEN SHOULD CONSULT THE INSTRUCTOR AND CANNOT REGISTER WITHOUT PERMISSION.)  3 units.
