OBJECTIFS DU COURS (Courses Goals)
Prereq: Fr 101D or equivalent (usually recommended as a first college course for students with 1-3 years high school French [7th and 8th grades count as 1 year]); students with 3 years high school French should consider taking French 105D in place of French 102D.
French 102 is an introductory French course designed for the beginning student. Using an interactive team-teaching approach, this course stresses the development of the four language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) in a technologically facilitated authentic cultural context.
The make-up of the course consists of a "master class" (cours magistral) which meets on MWF, and a "subsection", or travail dirigé, on TuTh. These are not hierarchical terms, but rather express the program's focus on intellectual and experiential learning, and full integration of the material. Both instructors work together closely and meet weekly, and both instructors assign a grade at the end of the semester; the final grade consists of 60% of the MWF section grade, and 40% of the TuTh section grade.
While the emphasis in class will be on spoken French using computer, audio and video technology as a springboard, students will be expected to complete written homework assignments on a daily basis, as well as to work independently at home or in the multi-media language laboratory to complete the weekly "laboratoire" section of Entre Amis.
In addition, each course includes a number of "workshop" projects, or ateliers, which have as goal the mise-en-pratique of recently learned grammatical points, and as end-product a written composition (rédaction) using those grammar points. These ateliers thus serve to round out the classroom focus on speaking and listening with serious and contextualized attention to the development of writing skills.

TRAVAIL A LA MAISON (Homework)
Students are expected to read and prepare the pages of Entre Amis indicated on the syllabus. In addition, they may be expected to listen to their audio tape (Cassette orange) before a given class in order to enhance their pronunciation skills and their aural comprehension of the material to be done in class.
Written homework will also be assigned daily, according to the syllabus, and graded by the instructor to whom it is given. It is due on the same day indicated on the syllabus. Graded homework may consist of workbook exercices, CD-Rom exercices, vignettes, texts to read and prepare, questions to answer in writing on those texts, and exercices in the book. Language lab work, which is graded on a weekly basis, tests students' listening and writing skills.
The ateliers monitor students' ability to put into written practice grammar points learned in class; the rédactions are thus considered an integral reflection of skill acquirement and are graded heavily. In addition, emphasis will be placed on the compositions at the end of every chapter in the Cahier d'exercices.
Participation in class is essential to the successful completion of the course, and participation grades are based on pre-class preparation as well as attendance.
NOTES (Grades)
EPREUVES (Quizzes), DICTEES (Dictations)
and EXAMENS (Exams)
Quizzes or dictations will be given once a week, either in the MWF or in the TuTh section, and will be graded by the appropriate instructor.
Written exams (midterm and final) are to be graded by the MWF instructor, and oral exams (midterm and final) by the TuTh instructor.
Make-ups on quizzes are to be given only
if the following two conditions are satisfied: the student must provide
a doctor's notice or proof of emergency, and the instructor must be informed
of the problem BEFORE the time of the quizz. Make-ups on exams are not
allowed.

UNITES DE VALEUR - UV (Credits)
French 102 is a 5 credit course requiring 5 hours of class meeting and 1 hour of independent work in the multimedia lab outside of class.
French 1021 is additional, optional and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED 1-credit practice session class which meets 2 hours per week at the following times: TuTh 11-12.
PRESENCE (Attendance)
Since language learning is a process which
builds upon itself, attendance in all classes is required.
Students should inform the instructor of any absence BEFORE class on that day. All instructors can be reached by e-mail.
ABSENCES WILL LOWER THE GRADE SIGNIFICANTLY.
Students are encouraged to put aside fears about "saying it wrong" and to participate fully in class, and to concentrate on the joys and FUN of learning a new language. Stress and anxiety about grades tend to decrease rather than enhance performance. AMUSEZ-VOUS BIEN and take delight in your new-found means of self-expression!
