Johnathon Farris

Ph.D. Cornell University

Dr. Johnathan Farris is joining the department for the year as a lecturer in the
arts of East Asia. Johnathan (also known as Nathan, or to his Chinese friends,
Jiangnan) specializes in the architectural and artistic manifestations of
Sino-Western relations over the course of the last three hundred years. Last
year, he presented his work on foreigners, architecture, and the city of
Guangzhou (Canton) at both the Association for Asian Studies meeting and the
Vernacular Architecture Forum. He is currently working on a book on the topic
for the Spatial Habitus series of the University of Hawaii Press. He will be
teaching courses on The Arts of China 907-2005, and on East Asian Garden and
Landscape Traditions, as well as the survey on the Arts of Asia for the
department, as well as a seminar on Cities in Asia for International and Area
Studies.
