Carolyn Sargent has studied gender and healing in West Africa, child health and gender ideology in Jamaica, and is currently engaged in research on gender, reproduction, and Islamic discourse among West African migrants in France. She is the co-editor of Gender in Cross-Cultural Perspective and Gender and Health.

Rebecca Lester works on the intersections of gender, medicine, and religion. A recent article explores the mystical experiences of a young nun she worked with in Mexico and the ways in which this woman drew on contradictory explanatory models to make sense of them.

Lois Beck teaches the courses, "Islam and Politics" and "Women and Islam." Her recent books include Women in Iran from the Rise of Islam to 1800 and Women in Iran from 1800 to the Islamic Republic.

Shanti Parikh’s research on HIV transmission emphasizes how geographies of risk are intertwined with gendered notions of propriety, prestige, and mobility.  She explores the social organization of masculinity and femininity, and how they converge with wider “opportunity structures”—such as migration, gender inequality, and poverty/wealth—to propel men into extramarital sexual liaisons (The Secret). Her work on global feminisms has been featured and funded by Fulbright’s New Century Scholar program.

Derek Pardue teaches courses on gender as part of identity formation and has written about Brazilian hip hop as a performative space for masculinity.
