The Kofyar Homeland

The Setting

Kofyar homeland, frontier core area, Nigerian Middle Belt. Jos Plateau, Gondwana land remnant, emplaced mountains, Shemankar Riv. Plateau escarpment, Kofyar homeland compound. Protection from slaving & raiding. Pop densities of 100, 500/km2 in hills, plains in 1950s.

Fertilizer

Herd of goats; penned, stall-fed during growing season; forms rich compost (zuk). Spreading zuk on the compound field as fertilizer before the rains. Infield (futung) of hill compound, shown by zuk piles.

Ridging and Basining

Homeland farmstead; millet, sorghum near compound; waffle ridges with peanuts, maize. Transplanting late millet into prepared ridges.

Terracing

Homeland Crops

Sorghum. Late millet in the homeland. Pennisetum millet grain heads. Brewing millet beer.
