Students will be introduced to anthropology through the critique of films. The films range from Hollywood classics to foreign films to top recent releases, and each one highlights social or biological phenomena that are of central interest in anthropology. Topics include human evolution, genetics, cultural diversity, society and economics, gender issues, and world views. Key anthropological issues featured in each week's film will be supplemented by lecture, discussion and short readings. The main purpose of the course is to provide non-majors with an understanding of anthropological perspectives on society and science.
One film will be viewed each week on Tuesday from 4:00 to 6:00 pm (or less time, depending on film length). On Thursday (4:00-5:00 pm) a discussion -- sometimes with lecture material -- will focus on key anthropological issues from the the week's film.
Grades will be based on one short paper (4-5 pages), a short research bibliography (2-4 pages), and two exams that will cover the content of the films. Detail on the assignments and the exams will be presented in class. Please inspect the course schedule and make sure you do not have a conflict. THERE WILL BE NO MAKE-UP PAPERS OR EXAMS.
