Medicine & Society Program
The selective, four-year Medicine & Society program in Arts & Sciences, administered by the Department of Anthropology, explores relationships among culture, behavior, and health. Sophomores Dan Feng and Sophie Li created and implemented a smoking survey for the St. Louis Christian Chinese Community Service Center as part of a required internship for the program. Below, they are shown interviewing Chinese immigrants at a grocery store on Olive Boulevard in University City. Survey participants were later invited to a health screening and bilingual information session on tobacco use, and the survey results were used to apply for grant funding for smoking cessation programs for Chinese community members. Other internship sites include the St. Louis City and County Departments of Health, Planned Parenthood, Grace Hill Neighborhood Health Centers, Community Health in Partnership Services, and the American Red Cross.
