POSSIBILITY NO. 828
Learning from experts in the field
The Summer Writers Institute brings together aspiring writers and experienced authors.

Each summer, aspiring writers of all ages flock to Washington University for an exciting, intensive writing workshop with experts. The Summer Writers Institute, now in its 13th year, offers opportunities for writers of all genres: literary fiction, creative nonfiction, short stories, novels, personal essays, travel writing, nature writing, biographies and poetry.
The two-week Summer Writers Institute creates a community that supports and engages writers. Each workshop consists of a group discussion and critique of works-in-progress led by professional writers. The workshop gives writers a “test audience” for their writing and gives the participants unique access to experts in the field.
Participating in the institute can have a profound effect on career development. According to one of last year’s participants, "The Summer Writers Institute was, by far, the most valuable experience I've had to date in terms of furthering my writing career...I better understand the basics of strong writing and I have a more realistic plan for igniting my professional writing career."
Writing is an art form for all ages, and the Summer Writers Institute doesn’t forget young writers. Last year’s successful Young Writers Institute will be repeated for high-school juniors and seniors. Students have the opportunity to study with working writers and get to know the St. Louis literary community. Mornings are spent writing poetry and fiction and focusing on technique. In the afternoons, they join the other participants of the Summer Writers Institute for panel discussions with published writers.
Writing among other aspiring authors, learning about the publishing process and hands-on instruction from award winning authors are just a few reasons the Summer Writers Institute is a rewarding experience.
