Cheri Casanova
Department of Psychology

Cheri plays a huge role in our institutional memory, the inter-generational transfer of knowledge, and positive workplace atmosphere in the Department of Psychology. Since joining Washington University in 1982, Cheri has worked for five Chairs as Administrative Assistant and each is in agreement how valuable Cheri is. Her confidence and positive outlook is contagious and her eagerness to share her expertise and time to help faculty, staff and students reflects well on the reputation of Washington University. Cheri has been in charge of all phases of scheduling of faculty searches and several conferences. Her attention to detail and professionalism cast an excellent first impression of Washington University to visitors and candidates.

Kathy Daniel
International & Areas Studies Program

As the Financial Manager for International and Area Studies, Kathy needs all the efficiency she can get. She is in charge of numerous complex budgets in International and Area Studies and she always manages to support the IAS activities financially by appreciating the importance of our academic mission. Whether it is finding the funding for yet another TA for our growing classes, sorting through voluminous receipts from summer study abroad or deciphering the U.S. Department of Education’s new online application process, Kathy has been up to the challenge.

Warren Davis
College of Arts & Sciences

Warren is devoted to serving our students. One can see his generous spirit by watching his interactions with his advisees, with whom he has an excellent rapport. Students transferring to Washington University have the good fortune of working with Warren to ease the transition both intellectually and socially. He is also an integral part of our Mock Trial, spending quite a bit of time holding try-outs, arranging for coaches and judges, and traveling with the team over weekends for out of town competitions. Warren is also the chief organizer of the ArtSci Recognition Commencement Ceremony, the highlight to an ending of our academic year.

Jack Diani
Department of Biology

As Manager of the Animal Facilities, Jack oversees the care of all animals used in research or teaching on the Danforth Campus. This includes thousands of animals, including monkeys, rodents, rabbits, bats, birds, crabs, crayfish, chicks and turtles. Jack is quick to establish the special environment that faculty need to conduct successful experiments, such as a cold room where large, wild ground squirrels can slip into hibernation. Jack provides professional advice about proper animal care to all researchers from senior investigators to freshmen.

Sarah Jordan
Department of Physics

Sarah holds the position of Administrative Secretary in the Department of Physics. Her outstanding personality, quick mind, and eagerness to help make her a perfect match not only to the important tasks of greeting and caring for the needs of visitors, but also for general “trouble-shooting.” Sarah deals with countless problems, sometimes daily, which she deals with extreme efficiency. She takes on innumerable tasks eagerly, and performs them all with competency, grace, humor, and ease. Most importantly, she cares about the Department, cares that everything goes well, and cares that the faculty are able to teach and do research with a minimum of clerical burden.

Gloria Lucy
Weidenbaum Center

Gloria has taken the lead in expanding the Center’s efforts in support of faculty grantmanship. Grant proposals for anthropology, education, economics, and political science to NSF, NIH, and other agencies and foundations that previously went through department offices now go through Gloria. She also has taken the lead in expanding the Center’s Eliot Society membership. In the past six months, the Center added twenty new members. Gloria also manages a wide variety of public affairs programs for faculty, students and local contributors. Most popular are the monthly breakfast speaker’s series that draws about 90 people. Her professionalism, tremendous efforts, and exceptional dedication have enhanced not only the Center but Arts & Sciences as well.

Kimberly Mount
PNP Program

Kimberly does a superlative job as Administrative Assistant for the PNP program. Her duties require sound judgment, initiative, and sensitivity to intellectual issues. She has performed these extraordinarily. Kimberly is a key part of the public face of PNP, both to students and Washington University and to academics and prospective students elsewhere. Her work behind the scenes is integral to the smooth running of the graduate and undergraduate programs, as well as to the effectiveness of the research activities that we undertake.

Sheryl Peltz
Department of History

In her role as Office Manager of the Department of History, Sheryl handles the normal demands and frustrations of budget and office management in a large department with ease. Her good humor and grace are appreciated by the fifty-odd Ph.D. students in their progress toward the degree and her ability to organize and keep records for three or more hiring searches per year are valued by the faculty. Sheryl knows the strengths, needs and habits of the every departmental faculty member and has been an exceptional steward, advocate and partner to the faculty. Graduate students continuously count on her willingness to help with various issues or concerns.

Kathleen Schneider
Department of English

Kathy, Academic Coordinator for the Department of English, is an invaluable resource for faculty, staff, and students. Her strong sense of initiative and unflagging support have provided valuable support for the Director of Graduate Studies and for the graduate students associate with the Department of English. She has created a new database for the annual graduate applications, which exceeds 400 individual applications. Kathy also maintains the English Major and Minor files and assists the faculty at advising time with up-to-date information.

Barb Winston
Environmental Studies Program
In her role as Administrative Assistant, Barb has worked with all four Directors of the Environmental Studies Program and she has been instrumental in directing the Program to grow from its first special major graduate in 1993 to between 25 and 40 graduating seniors for the past seven years. Barb helped created and maintain a systematic procedure for the senior honors program in Environmental Studies. She is a tremendous help to faculty and students with her upbeat attitude and attention to details. Barb goes beyond the requirements of her job; she works not just to administer the Environmental Studies Program, but to improve it.

Dean’s Award
Justin Carroll
Assistant Vice Chancellor for Students and Dean of Students

Justin's leadership and enthusiasm have helped shape the way thousands of students experience the University, and as a mentor he has built lasting personal relationships with many of them. Among the most visible of his varied responsibilities are residential life and athletics. During his tenure, particularly in the past decade, the student environment has seen numerous enhancements. Under Justin’s watch, the undergraduates have gained 12 new residence buildings on campus, all of which are equipped with classroom and study spaces. Every freshman floor has a faculty associate (nearly 40 total), and five faculty members (and their families) have apartments and offices in the residence houses, creating unprecedented interaction between students and faculty. Justin leads one of our most critical areas of the students' experience, and he has transformed the residential area into an extremely valuable contributor to the institution's mission.
