Dean Schaal announces additions to senior leadership

Barbara Schaal, dean of the faculty of Arts & Sciences and the Mary-Dell Chilton Distinguished Professor, is pleased to announce the addition of two faculty advisers to her senior leadership team. These advisers, who will formally assume their new roles as of July 1, 2018, are:

Deanna Barch, the Gregory B. Crouch Professor of Psychiatry and chair of the Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences

In her new role, Barch will oversee academic policies and procedures that advance and support faculty development.

William B. Tolman, professor in the Department of Chemistry and editor of Inorganic Chemistry, the premier publication of his field

Tolman will work with faculty and departments to advance and support all aspects of the research enterprise.

Barch and Tolman will both become standing members of the Academic Planning Committee. The new positions are intended to strengthen Arts & Sciences’ capacity to meet the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Schaal also plans to widen the scope of responsibilities already held by Kit Wellman, professor in the Department of Philosophy and dean of academic planning.

“I am excited to move forward with these changes, as I have been thinking for quite a while about how best to engage insights from some of our most experienced faculty in day-to-day matters of academic planning and operations,” Schaal says, adding that she is pleased to add such distinguished colleagues to her immediate leadership circle. “One of the central priorities of the next few years will be to work with university leaders on a new round of strategic planning for Arts & Sciences, which involves substantial investments in faculty as well as a significant upgrade to our facilities across all three divisions of our school. Having Deanna, Kit, and Bill on board from the outset to help shape and support these efforts will be enormously valuable.”
