Research Interests
International relations, international political economy. Professor Sobel specializes in international political economy, globalization, the politics of international finance, and growth and development. He is currently working on two research projects. One project examines domestic financial arrangements as credible commitments and necessary conditions for hegemonic leadership in the global economy. In this project he examines three historical periods of global economic leadership: the Dutch in the 1600s, the British in the 1800s, and the United States in the 1900s. The other project compares globalization in the late 1800s and late 1900s and its relationship to the modern social welfare state.
