Using the Newsgroup
Below you will find directions on how to access the newsgroup using
either PINE or Netscape Navigator.
Using Netscape:

The easiest way to access the newsgroup is to simply type (or click on
the following link) news:wu.artsci.webworkshops
into the Netscape Navigator browser window (where you would normally enter
a web address). This will open a new window.

On the left hand side of your screen there will be a list of newsgroups.
Click on wu.artsci.webworkshops once to highlight it.

You can then click on "Get New Messages" from the drop-down menu, "File."
This will load the newsgroup's messages into Netscape. You can then
click on any message to read it.

If you wish to send a message, select "New Message" from the drop-down
"Message" window. Please remember to identify yourself in the message,
particularly if you send a message from one of the computers in Eads 14
or the GradLab (since the message will be from "nouser" from one of these
computers).

Alternately, if you are already reading one newsgroup message, you can
choose "Reply" from the drop-down "Message" window and then write your
message.
Alternate Method Using Netscape:

In Netscape Navigator, choose "Newsgroups" from the drop-down "Communicator"
menu.

If the newsgroup wu.artsci.webworkshops is listed in the left hand side
of the screen, then you can proceed to retrieve. read and respond to messages
as outlined above. If there is no wu.artsci.webworkshops newsgroup
on the left hand side of the screen, do the following:

From the drop-down "File" menu, select "Subscribe"

In the window for server make sure "news.wustl.edu" is selected.
If news.wustl.edu is not a choice, click on "Add Server."

Select "News Server" and click continue.

In the server field, type news.wustl.edu and then click OK.
news.wustl.edu should now be an option in the server field. Select
news.wustl.edu

Scroll down the list of newsgroups until you reach "wu." Double click
on "wu."

Scroll down until you find "wu.artsci." Double click on "wu.artsci."

Scroll down to "wu.artsci.webworkshops" and select it by clicking on it
once.

Click on the "Subscribe" button. wu.artsci.webworkshops should now
be one of the newsgroups listed on the left of your screen. To receive,
read, and send messages, follow the directions above.
Newsgroup Access Using PINE

Access PINE as you would to read your email (open Telnet, enter your login
name and password, type PINE).

Open your folder list (type "L").
-
Scroll to the bottom of the list of your email folders to the bottom, so
that the phrase "select here to see expanded list" is highlighted.
At this point the tool bar at the bottom of your page will change.

Hit "A" to subscribe to a bulletin board.

Enter the domain for our bulletin board: wu.artsci.webworkshops
-
You have subscribed to the newsgroup and can now access it by highlighting
it at the bottom of your folders list and hitting "Enter."
Reading Bulletin Board Messages in PINE:
Once you have accessed the bulletin
board in PINE you can read bulletin board messages just as you would
regular email messages.
Posting Bulletin Board Messages in the PINE:

To post a new message to the bulletin board in PINE, open the newsgroup
and type "C" to compose a regular email message.

To reply to a specific message select the message (highlight it)
and type "R" to reply.

Do not be frightened by the warning that your message will be sent
to thousands of people, it will only be sent to our bulletin board.
