 1.  Introductory Web Issues

• Take a look at a definition of the WWW provided by Brown Computing Solutions.
• If you are having trouble with WWW jargon, see our short list of some WWW terminology.
• Here is an example of an economics database available on the WWW.
• This is probably a site that you have used, the Wash U library link available on the WWW.
• The espn.com web site is an example of an entertainment link available on the WWW.

Workshop 3: The Web as a Teaching Tool: building your course site

1. Issues of Style:

• Yale Style Manual

Perhaps the best style guide for the web available. This content-rich site includes chapters on: Interface Design, Site Design, Page Design, Web Graphics, and  Web Multimedia and Animation. Don't miss valuable tips on organizing and chunking information, design and visual logic, backward compatibility, using tables for page layout, and everything you ever needed to know about graphics.
 
• Mining Co. Guide to Web Design

Truly exhaustive database for all your web design needs. Links to photo galleries, clip art, graphic design tips, multimedia applications, etc.
 
• Apple Web Design Guide

In Apple's own words: "This Web site contains information about general human interface principles that you can apply to designing Web pages. Jakob Nielsen provides ten tips novices should be sure to heed.

An tongue-in-cheek example of everything you shouldn't do on your site. Quite funny.

Need help with typos? This program provides a forms-based gateway to a spell checker for WWW documents.

• Distance Education Clearinghouse - from the University of Wisconsin-Extension Service
• Distance Learning Resource Network - disseminates information from and for educators, administrators, policymakers and parents interested in the effective implementation of distance education.
• Institute for Distance Education - supported and

 administered by University of  Maryland University College.
• White Pine's Web Resources for Educators - a small sample of what's available for educators on the Internet.
• "Report Examines How Technology May Change Higher Education" New York Times on the Web, Pamela Mendels, May 27, 1998.  - demographic patterns suggest continuing education of baby-boom and education of echo boom will be prime drivers of academic market.  Serving these markets will require accomodating their unique needs.
