10:00 A.M. Coffee and Donuts - The Graduate Center - Preview of the New Graduate Center and meet other new students!

10:30 A.M. Danforth Campus Walking Tour - The Graduate Center in the New Danforth University Center (optional) A 30-minute tour presenting information about your new campus conducted by members of the Graduate Student Senate.

1:15 P.M. - 3:45 P.M. Panel Sessions for New Graduate Students in Arts and Sciences Departments on the Danforth Campus and Ph.D. students in Social Work

1:15 P.M. Pick up Orientation Information Packet - Arts & Sciences Laboratory Sciences Building lobby

1:30 P.M. - 2:30 P.M. Arts & Sciences Laboratory Sciences Building room 300 (auditorium)  Graduate School Dean Richard Smith

Making the transition to Graduate Student. What does it mean to be a graduate student at Washington University? Ideas and strategies for making successful transitions from the undergraduate or work world to graduate study from faculty and graduate student perspectives. Information about policies and procedures and student services to support a student's academic, professional and personal development. Panel participants include faculty, graduate studies directors, graduate student leaders and administration representatives from the Graduate School Office, Career Cetner and Danforth Student Health and Counseling, and Olin Libraries Arts & Sciences Laboratory Sciences Building room 300 (auditorium)

2:30 P.M. - 2:45 P.M. Refreshment Break (front rows exit to front left door to lower level hallway; back rows proceed to Gallery Hallway outside auditorium)

2:45 P.M. - 3:45 P.M. Managing Finances and Logistics. Information about graduate institutional and external funding sources and practices. The nuts and bolts of direct payroll deposit, tax, student loan and budgeting information and some tips for living on a tight budget, safety, parking, and transportation. Panel participants include representatives from the Graduate School, Transportation and Parking, Campus Police and Graduate Student leaders. Arts and Sciences Laboratory Sciences Building room 300 auditorium

4:00 P.M. - 6:00 P.M. Graduate School-wide Plenary Session & Graduate Dean's Reception for New DBBS, Movement Science, Speech & Hearing, Engineering Ph.D. and Business Ph.D., Social Work Ph.D. students and graduate students in Arts and Sciences on Danforth Campus

4:00 P.M. - 4:45 P.M. Plenary Session: "Graduate Education at Washington University" Arts and Sciences Laboratory Sciences Building room 300 (auditorium)
Welcome Remarks by the Chancellor, the Graduate Student Co-Presidents Suzuko Knott, German and Ben Johnson, Physics; and University-wide Graduate Professional Council President

4:45 P.M. - 6:00 P.M. Dean's Reception (Location TBA)
Come and meet other graduate students, GSS officers, department peer mentors, administrators and faculty. Visit members of campus services and student organizations and community organizations at information tables where they will be available to answer your questions and distribute information.

Tuesday, August 26, 2008 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Olin Library Open House Tour of Olin Library for graduate students: discover the Libraries' online information system; meet your subject librarian; search for resources in your field; enjoy the best afternoon refreshments on campus! Get acquainted with library staff.
