Selection Process and Deadline

RE: Selection of Graduate Student Representative (2) to the Washington University Board of Trustees


This is to solicit applications for the position of two non-voting graduate student representatives to the Washington University Board of Trustees. The university-wide Professional and Graduate Student Coordinating Committee will select the finalists to be interviewed by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, who will then determine which two graduate students will serve in this important role in the coming year 2009-2010. All interested qualified graduate and professional students are encouraged to apply.

 A graduate student representative to the Board of Trustees must be a full-time graduate student in residence (May 2009 through May 2010), be in good academic standing, and able to make the time commitment necessary. In addition, it is important that the graduate student representative have knowledge of graduate study at Washington University, be articulate, be able to present a variety of opinions, have sound judgement, maintain confidentiality, and hold the respect of peers, of the faculty, and others who know the graduate student representative. The graduate student representative should also be willing to maintain close communication with the several graduate and professional student constituencies within the Washington University community, such as the Professional and Graduate Student Coordinating Committee (ProgradS) and Graduate Professional Council (GPC).

 APPLICATION PROCESS

1. Obtain applications from the Dean's Office in your School or in The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in The Graduate Center, Danforth University Center room 300, or at  http://www.prograds.wustl.edu.   Click on application process.

 2. Return your portion of the application to The Graduate Center, Danforth University Centeer room 300 or Campus Box 1186 by noon, Monday, February 23, 2009.

 3. Submit two recommendation letters (use attached forms); at least one must be from a faculty member or administration representative of your School and a second from another member of the Washington University Community. Please ask your recommenders to use the attached forms and return to the above listed location by noon, February 23, 2009. NOTE: You should select recommenders who are familiar with your academic record and leadership activities. Members of the Professional and Graduate Student Coordinating Committee are not eligible to write recommendations.

 4. It is your responsibility to check to see that your application file is complete. Your file should contain the attached application form, two page curriculum vitae or resume, your essay response and two completed recommendation forms. Incomplete or electronic applications will not be considered.

 5. Interviews for graduate student finalists will take place on Wednesday, March 18 (12:45 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.) in The Graduate Center to select nominees; please also hold Tuesday, March 17 from 1:30 p.m. -- 4:30 p.m. as an additional time for interview if needed. The nominees will then be interviewed by John F. McDonnell, Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees, on April 13, 2009 between 10:00 a.m. and noon.  Please mark your calendar and plan to be available if you are selected for interviews.

Dates for Washington University Board of Trustees Meetings: May 1, 2009; October 2, 2009; December 4, 2009; March 6, 2010; and May 7, 2010.
