CAS Curriculum
Course Requirements for Undergraduate Minor
Most students interested in completing the minor will be considering a career in social science or biological research. The minor requires 15 credits (5 courses), plus a significant research project involving the analysis of data. The best possible expression of this requirement would be an honors thesis in the student’s major, using skills gained in the Applied Statistics minor.
The minor will start with courses at the 300 level, and all courses are cross-listed so that they are open to graduate students.
A minor in Applied Statistics would not substitute for or replace courses in mathematical statistics offered by the Department of Mathematics.
(Students considering a career in statistics should pursue their primary curriculum through Mathematics; those students may choose to enrich their education with some courses from the Centor for Applied Statistics.)
The core curriculum requires a sequence of three required courses and two electives, as follows:
1. Group A - select one of the following:
Applied Statistics 363 - Quantitative Political Methodology
(Formerly Applied Statistics 330A - Introduction to Applied Statistics)
Applied Statistics 2200 - Elementary Probability and Statistics
(Formerly Applied Statistics 330D - Introduction to Applied Statistics)
2. Group B - select one of the following:
Applied Statistics 364 - Intermediate Applied Statistics: Linear Models
(Formerly Applied Statistics 350E - Intermediate Applied Statistics: Linear Models)
Applied Statistics 413 - Introduction to Economics
(Formerly Applied Statistics 350C - Intermediate Applied Statistics: Linear Models)
3. Group C - select one of the following:
Applied Statistics 321G - Philosophy of Science
(Formerly Applied Statistics 361A - Philosophy of Science)
4. Elective
5. Elective
The fourth and fifth courses to complete the minor can be selected from a series of electives:
- 420 - Categorical Data Anaylsis
- 430 - Multilevel Modeling
- 440 - Factor Analysis and Related Methods
- 450 - Panel Data
- 560 - Visiting Scholar Statistical Research Seminar in Applied Statistics
- 581 - Quantitative Political Methodology I
- 5067 - Quantitative Methods II
Courses for Graduate Students
All courses offered for the Undergraduate Minor are cross-listed at the 400-500 level so that they are available to graduate students as shown in the table below. Graduate students interested in developing a solid foundation in Applied Statistics should consider the sequence of courses for the Undergraduate Minor.

*Quantitative Political Methodology is a prerequisite for all other courses in the minor. Remaining core curriculum courses can be taken simultaneously. In special cases other courses can be substituted for ASTAT 2200 and some courses in the Business School. Please meet with the Program Director to discuss your specific situation.
