Theatron

Theatron is a journal published out of Washington University in St. Louis journal devoted to dramatic literature and criticism, new plays and translations of plays. While headed by graduate students at Washington University, article selection and the review process include collaboration from graduate students and faculty at numerous universities in the United States and other countries. Theatron is supported by Washington University's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the Performing Arts Department, and the Committee on Comparative Literature

Open to all academic and professional readership, Theatron endeavors to create a space for dialogue about the theoretical issues pertaining to the theatre, its complex nature and audience, and to foster new dramatic voices. Named after the Greek word for “theater” (as an homage to its origins), the journal title alludes to the specific goal of combining theory and practice, contemplation and production. Etymologically speaking, “theatron,” like theory, comes from the word “the(a)omai” (meaning at once “to see,” “to speculate,” “to observe”), and therefore involves spectacle, theory, and contemplation. More precisely, Theatron is the place where one can see a spectacle, and by extension, can refer to the audience itself.
