Getting to the MemDev
Laboratory!

What are we studying?

The aim of our studies is to further our knowledge of cognitive development, or how the mind grows and acquires knowledge.

How are these studies run?

Each study consists of games that last for about 10 minutes.  The study is typically conducted in your child’s classroom at school, or in our laboratory.  Participation usually involves playing different sorts of games or listening to stories.  Our experience is that most children enjoy participating in the studies; however, if at any time your child finds it tedious, becomes timid, or loses interest, he or she may leave the game.

Important things to note:

The study is absolutely confidential.  No record is released without the consent of the legal guardian.

No child will be allowed to participate without returning the consent form, signed by his or her legal guardian.

Kelly Braden, lab manager and research assistant to Dr. Pascal Boyer of Washington University, conducts the studies and may be contacted at (314) 935-4739 or kdbraden@artsci.wustl.edu (see side bar for link).

Will your child’s responses be rated or ranked?

No, we are not measuring the differences between children’s individual capacities or their academic achievements.  We are concerned with the differences between age groups, that is, how the mind develops in general.

Although the aim of these studies is primarily academic, we hope they will be beneficial to school teachers and officials in the long run by providing a better understanding of mental development.

Additional contact information, such as our mailing address and directions to our laboratory, may be found through the "Getting to the MemDev Laboratory" link in the side bar on the left.

Thank you for your help!
