Degree Requirements

 

For freshman and sophomores, recommended courses include Comp. Lit. 211 and Comp. Lit. 213, in addition to language study. All prospective majors should enroll in Comp. Lit. 204, which is offered during the spring semester, as early as possible in their academic career.

For the Comparative Literature Major:

Eighteen units (six courses) in Comparative Literature. These six courses will include

  • An Introduction to Comparative Literature (Comp Lit 204)
  • Literary Theory (Comp Lit 393)
  • Four additional courses, including one that devotes at least half of the semester to non-Western literature. The four additional courses will be at the 300 level or above, with two exceptions:
    • One 200 level course, such as World Literature (Comp Lit 211) may be counted. (World Literature counts for the non-western requirement).
    • For one course a student may substitute a semester's study, undertaken during the student's college career, of a second foreign language.
  • Twelve units of advanced study (300 level or above) in a language other than English.*
  • For the Comparative Literature Minor
  • Twelve units in Comparative Literature, including at least six units at the 300-level or above. Two of the following introductory courses may be counted toward the minor: Comp. Lit. 204, 211, 213E, 215C-218C, 241C, 242C.
  • Six units of advanced study (300-level or above) in a language other than English.*


For the Comparative Arts Major:

Twelve units (four courses) in Comparative Literature. These four courses will include

  • An Introduction to Comparative Literature (Comp Lit 204)
  • Three additional courses, including a Comparative Arts course. The three additional courses will be at the 300 level or above, with one exception. For one course a student may substitute a semester's study, undertaken during the student's college career, of a second foreign language.
  • Six units of advanced study (300 level or above) in theoretical or historical courses in music, art history, drama, dance, film, or aesthetics. (For students specializing in literature and music, Music Theory III and IV [Music 221 and 222] will fulfill this requirement.)
  • Four semesters' study (4-12 units) in an applied art form: music, fine arts, drama, dance, creative writing. These additional units need not be at the 300 or 400 level.
  • Twelve units of advanced study (300 level or above) in a language other than English.*
  • For the Comparative Arts Minor
  • Six units of advanced study (300-level or above) in Comparative Literature, including a course in Comparative Arts.
  • Six units of advanced study (300-level or above) in theoretical or historical courses in music, art history, drama, dance, film, or aesthetics. (For students specializing in literature and music, Music Theory III and IV [Music 221 and 222] will fulfill this requirement).
  • Six units of advanced study (300-level or above) in a language other than English.*

     

    *Students studying Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Hebrew, or Russian may substitute for three of the twelve units a course in which the literature of the language they are studying is read in translation.
