Information
about
Study Abroad
Beginning in academic year 2001, all
undergraduate
students studying in a Washington University-sponsored study-abroad
program
through the Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages for either
an
academic year or one semester are required to submit a portfolio upon
their
return to Washington University in order to:
- encourage serious planning for the
study abroad
experience
- integrate the study abroad
experience into
the overall WU program of study
- maintain WU standards of academic
excellence
in study abroad programs undertaken for WU credit
All undergraduate students studying for an
academic year or one semester must submit a portfolio of their
coursework
to the respective Study Abroad Advisor by the first week of classes of
the semester they return to WU. This portfolio should include
syllabi,
papers, exams from all courses taken abroad, as well as any additional
papers or projects required by the individual study-abroad
program.
Video and cassette tapes may also be included when appropriate.
The
portfolio must contain a Table of Contents and be presented in an
organized
manner for approval by faculty in the appropriate section of
ANELL.
Transfer of credit to WU for coursework taken abroad will not be
awarded
without the submission of this portfolio and its approval by the
faculty.
Students should keep in close contact with their advisors while abroad
to make certain that they are taking the appropriate courses and that
they
have the necessary approval for their papers or projects when required.
Since language programs abroad
sometimes
differ from Washington University language programs in terms of level,
pace and materials used, returning students who plan to continue their
language study in ANELL will be required to take a placement exam to
determine
in which class they should enroll.
NOTE: ALL MAJORS IN ANELL
STUDYING
ABROAD IN THEIR JUNIOR YEAR ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO SELECT A PROJECT
THAT CAN BE EXPANDED UPON FOR THE ANELL SENIOR CAPSTONE EXPERIENCE
AND/OR
A SENIOR HONOR’S THESIS.
