This elder was photographed in 1998 by Prof. Shanti Parikh during her research on the history of sexuality in Uganda. He descends from the founding clan of Bulubandi village. According to Basoga historical tradition, in pre-colonial times the clan was among the landed aristocracy. During the British colonial administration from 1900-1962 the males became chiefs of the area, having many farm laborers and wives. With the on-set of cash cropping and civil forms of status, this once powerful and wealthy clan has dispersed and its local authority has virtually diminished. This old man has had over seven wives, all who left him for wealthier men or to live on their own. |
