Left. When time stopped: Inside the St. Bernard Parish Masonic Hall. This building was on the high ground in this Parish (County) east of New Orleans . The height of the water line is approximately 7 feet (photograph taken March 14, 2006). Right. The Lower Ninth Ward, New Orleans, January 19, 2006. A massive levee failure on the nearby Industrial Canal on August 28/29, 2005 caused widespread devastation. Five months after the hurricane the Lower 9th Ward, and indeed most low lying parts of New Orleans and adjacent parishes, had yet to be cleaned up and recovery was still only a dream for most that had lived in these neighborhoods. |
